Privacy policy
Last reviewed ·We collect as little as we can. The calculators run in your browser and don’t send your numbers anywhere unless you ask us to email them. We use no advertising or tracking cookies. If you give us your email, we use it only for what you asked for, and you can have it deleted anytime.
The calculators
All the math runs in your browser. Your numbers are kept in the page address (the URL) so you can bookmark or share a result. Anyone you share that link with can see the numbers in it. We don’t receive them unless you press “Email me my results”.
Policy upload (Renters Insurance Checkup)
The Renters Insurance Checkup can read your insurance declarations page so you don’t have to type the numbers. These pages carry names, addresses and policy numbers, so here’s exactly what happens:
- Your file is sent once, read, and then deleted. We never store the file or the numbers on it: it isn’t saved to disk, to storage, to our logs or to any analytics.
- Photos are shrunk and re-saved in your browser and again on our server before reading, which removes hidden photo data like location.
- The page is read by an AI model from Anthropic (Claude), through Anthropic’s API. Anthropic doesn’t use API inputs or outputs to train its models by default, and deletes them on its side within 30 days.
- Only coverage amounts and yes/no answers come back to your browser. Names, addresses and policy numbers are never returned or shown.
- You check every value before you get a verdict. Values read from an upload are never put in the page address, so they aren’t in any link you share.
- To stop abuse, we count uploads per device (a one-way hash of your IP address, not the address itself) and the cost of each read. Nothing else is kept.
You never have to upload anything: typing your answers works the same.
What we collect, and why
- Newsletter (The Weekly File): your email address, where you signed up, when you confirmed, and a one-way hash of your IP address and your browser name. The hash is kept as proof of consent and to stop abuse; we don’t store your raw IP address. You’re only added after you click the confirmation link we email you.
- “Email me my results”: your email address, the numbers you entered and the result, so we can send it. For the Renters Insurance Checkup, only the verdict and the list of gaps (never your file or any amounts). For a checklist, just your email address. This does not subscribe you to anything unless you tick the newsletter box (and then confirm).
- Affiliate links (when a page has them): when you click one, we record the partner, the page you clicked from and the time. Not who you are.
- Server logs: our host keeps standard technical logs (like IP address and browser) for security and troubleshooting, for a short period.
Cookies and tracking
We don’t use advertising, tracking or analytics cookies. Videos only load from YouTube (in privacy-enhanced mode) after you press play; until then, nothing is sent to YouTube. Our fonts are served from our own site.
Who processes your data
- Vercel hosts the website.
- Supabase stores newsletter sign-ups, emailed results and affiliate clicks, in the United States.
- Resend sends our emails.
- Anthropic reads declarations pages you choose to upload (see Policy upload).
We don’t sell or rent your personal information, and we don’t share it with advertisers.
How long we keep it
Newsletter records are kept while you’re subscribed. When you unsubscribe, we stop emailing you and keep only what’s needed to respect that choice.
Your choices and rights
Every newsletter email has a one-click unsubscribe link. To see, correct or delete what we hold about you, email hello@theadultfiles.com from the address in question. Depending on where you live (for example under Canada’s PIPEDA or US state privacy laws), you may have further rights, and we’ll honor them.
Children
The Adult Files is written for adults. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top of this page.
